National Institute of Design (NID) is located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It is regarded as one of the prestigious institutions in India, for design education. The college was established almost 40 years ago. National institute of Design is an autonomous institution, functioning under Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. It is recognized by the Dept. of Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt. of India. Though the main campus is located in Ahmedabad, some campuses of NID are also located elsewhere in India. Moreover, a new PG campus is being built in Gandhinagar. To enhance the professional experience of the students, National Institute of Design conducts workshop and training programs, on a regular basis. The college also provides sponsored design projects in classrooms. Moreover, students can undertake sponsored research program directly, by the industries.

Candidates who have completed their 10+2 level or equivalent exams like AISSCE/ IB/ ICSE etc are eligible to pursue undergraduate diploma courses. If a candidate has some skills in technical and related subjects, he would be given advantage of it. There is age limitation also. It should not exceed 20 years at the time of admission. There is a three years of relaxation in age for reserved categories.
Post Graduate Diploma:
General Eligibility
Candidates who have completed graduation or going to appear in the qualifying exam are eligible. The upper age limit is 27 years; a relaxation of three year is given to the reserved categories. A candidate with work experience would get advantage.
Product Design/ Transportation & Automobile Design/Furniture & Interior Design
A candidate, who has done B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Des/ B.Arch/ B.Int.Des/ or equivalent (under 10+2+4 pattern or more), is eligible to apply.
Ceramic & Glass Design
For doing the course, a candidate is needed to have completed B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Des/ B.Arch/ B.Int.Des/ BFA/ or equivalent. A graduate in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience is eligible also.
Textile Design
For this course, candidates having done B.Des/ BFA/ Graduation in Textile, Knitwear or Fashion, Home Science with Textiles & Clothing, Interior Design, Architecture, Textile or Handloom Technology, or equivalent, are eligible. A graduate in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience is also eligible.
Graphic Design
A candidate having done BFA/ B.Arch/ B.Des/ BVC/ B.Int Design/ Graduation in Communication Mass Media/ or equivalent, with at least one year relevant industry experience and proven skills, is eligible.
Animation Film Design/ Film & Video Communication / Animation Film Design
A candidate having done his BFA/ B.Arch/ B.Des/ BVC/ B.Litt/ Graduation in Communication Media, Film & TV, Mass Media/ or equivalent is eligible. A graduate in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience is eligible also.
Photography Design
A candidate who has done BFA/B.Arch/B.Des/B.Litt/Graduation in Communication Media, Film and TV, Mass Media/ or Equivalent is eligible. A Graduate in any discipline with one year relevant industry/ photography related experience is also eligible.
Admission Procedure:
Diploma:
Admission in undergraduate Diploma programs is done through an entrance examination, known as National Entrance Examination for Design (NEED). The candidates scoring qualifying marks in the entrance examination are then called for studio test and a personal interview.

Post Graduate Diploma:
NID conducts its own test for the admission in post graduate diploma course. This is followed by studio test and interview.
